Greencastle (PC-1119) was laid down as PC-1119 12 June 1942 by DeFoe Shipbuilding Co., Bay City, Mich.: launched 11 August 1942 and commissioned at New Orleans, La., 18 December 1942, Lt. Comdr. James Duffy:` in command.

After shakedown off Key West, she sailed 19 January 1943 for the Southwest Pacific. Steaming via New Caledonia, she reached Brisbane, Australia, 12 March and was assigned duty as flagship Allied Local Defense Forces, Northwest Australia. During the next 6 months she operated out of Brisbane, Townsville, and Cairns, Queensland, escorting convoys between Australia and New Guinea. During June and July she helped repel enemy planes that attacked Allied shipping at Port Moresby.

PC-1119 her base to Milne Bay, New Guinea, in September, and from there she escorted convoys moving men and supplies along the coast of Huon Gulf. On 2 October she supported amphibious landings at Finschhafen, which was to become the jumping off point for the invasion of New Britain. Transferred to the 7th Amphibious Force 6 December, she supported the initial invasion during landings at Arawe, New Britain, 17 December. Nine days later she supported landings by the 1st Marine Division at Cape Gloucester, then, after steaming along the northern coast of New Guinea, she participated in the assault against Saidor 2 January 1944.

During the next 3 months PC-1119 escorted convoys along the New Guinea coast to the Admiralties and New Britain. She supported an amphibious landing at Talasea, New Britain, 7 March. Driving westward along New Guinea, she joined the assault at Aitape 22 April;and, as an escort and patrol ship, she supported landings 3 July at Noemfoor, Schouten Islands. During this invasion she patrolled on anti shipping sweeps as the Japanese attempted to send reinforcements by barge. After steaming to Australia in August, she returned to Aitape 3 September to prepare for operations in the Moluccas. Between 15 and 24 September she steamed off Morotai. where she controlled landing craft and provided antiaircraft cover for supply transports. Departing 24 September ber, she sailed via Biak to Humboldt Bay where she arrived the 28th.

PC-1119 departed 9 October for the invasion of the Philippines. Steaming via Manus, Admiralties, she closed the coast of Leyte 20 October. After laying down shoal shoal at the northern end of Leyte Gulf, she served as landing control ship during the assault against Tacloban airfield. She remained off Leyte; and between 23 and 25 October she helped repel heavy enemy air attacks, during which she splashed three Japanese raiders.

Late on the 25th she sailed to search for survivors from gallant ships lost during the Battle off Samar. During mid watch 27 October she rescued 183 men from Gambier Bag ( CVE-73 ), then returned the same day to Leyte Gulf. Resuming duty as control and fire cover ship, she served in Leyte Gulf until 9 November. She sailed for New Guinea the 9th and reached Hollandia the 16th.

After repairs, she steamed to Sansapor New Guinea. 12 December to prepare for the invasion of Luzon. Departing in convoy 30 December, she reached Lingayen Gulf 9 January 1945 and there served as control ship for the landings at San Fabian Beach. The Japanese launched heavy air attacks against American shipping: and, while PC-1119 was returning to Leyte as a convoy escort, she was narrowly missed by suicide planes on the 12th and 13th.

The veteran sub chaser returned to Luzon 29 January: and, after supporting landings at San Felipe and San Nareiso by troops of the 8th Army, she arrived Subic Bay 3 February. On the 15th she escorted landing craft from Subic Bay for landings at Marivales, Bataan. The following day she served as fire support ship during the assault against Corregidor. As the first amphibious wave closed the beach, she poured gunfire into enemy pillboxes and gun positions and silenced two Japanese guns. She was briefly caught in enemy crossfire between CorrPgidor and Caballo. Although damaged by an enemy shell, she embarked casualties from LCM's and evacuated then while under fire to an offshore LST.

PC-1119 operated off western Luzon and Mindoro on antishipping sweeps until 11 March when she sailed for Leyte. Arriving the 14th, from 19 to 24 March she steamed via the Palaus to Hollandia. After repairing battle damage, she departed 30 June and returned to Subic Bay 8 July. During the next month she searched for enemy submarines off Luzon between Subic and San Fernando. Assigned to the Philippine Sea Frontier 14 August, after the end of hostilities she patrolled the South China Sea to accept the surrender of Japanese submarines.

Remaining in the Philippines after the end of the war, PC-1119 "a little ship with a number instead of a name " compiled a Pacific war record that equaled many a larger ship. Assigned to the 16th Fleet 19 March 1946, she returned to the United States and reported for duty- 10 August. She decommissioned 9 January 1947 at Green Cove Springs, Fla., and entered the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. While berthed at Green Cove Springs, she was name Greencastle 15 February 1956. She was sold to Boston Metals Co., Baltimore, Md., for scrapping 1 July 1958.

Greencastle received five battle stars for World War II service.

Laid down as a PC-461 Class Submarine Chaser at Defoe Shipbuilding of Bay City MI on 23 September 1942, PC-1129 commissioned into U.S. Navy service on 3 June 1943 as a member of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet. After a clearing the Great Lakes and entering the Mississippi River, PC-1129 and her crew meandered their way toward New Orleans where they joined into a convoy of Westbound amphibious craft and stood out for the Panama Canal.PC-1129 was launched at Defoe Shipbuilding Company in Bay City, Michigan in early 1943.

Joining the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Balboa, PC-1129 and her crew began regular convoy escort assignments between the Panama Canal and San Diego, eventually taking up the San Diego-Pearl Harbor route during the later months of 1943. Operating out of Pearl Harbor in through late 1944, PC-1129 escorted American Naval and Merchant convoys between Hawaii and numerous destinations throughout the South Pacific before she eventually shifted her homeport to the U.S. rear-area base at Seeadler Harbor, Manaus Island. Serving as one of several marshalling points for men, material and supplies bound for the upcoming Philippine Invasion, PC-1129 spent much of the fall of 1944 shuttling convoys back and forth between the Leyte beachhead and Manaus. As American forces steadily advanced into the Philippine archipelago, PC-1129 began to operate out of Leyte Gulf, where her anti-submarine and anti-aircraft capabilities were high demand.

Escorting both invasion and resupply convoys between Leyte and the advancing front lines through December 1944, PC-1129 and her crew became aware of the new Japanese doctrine of Kamikaze attacks, and spent several convoy deployments on constant alert and at general quarters. After seeing several convoys to their destinations, PC-1129 and her crew received new orders in January 1945 calling for her support in the 11th Airborne Division’s mission to secure the city of Nasugbu and escort a formation of landing craft carrying the 188th Glider Infantry Regiment to their designated landing beaches. Departing Leyte in escort on January 29, PC-1129 screened her charges all the way to their destination without incident, and as the aerial and amphibious assault commenced on 31 January, she stood offshore to provide on-call fire support. As darkness approached and ground forces continued to push inland, PC-1129 moved further offshore with the transports and landing craft into the relative safety of open waters where they would remain for the night. As the force withdrew, orders were circulated for each ship to post extra armed lookouts as rumors that Japanese explosive-laden speed boats were operating in the area.

In a screening position on the Southeastern portion of her formation as night fell, the PC-1129 and her crew prepared for another night and were soon called to their general quarters stations as reports raced across the ships that fast moving surface contacts had been picked up on radar. Moving to intercept the inbound threat, PC-1129 joined with several other Subchasers, Destroyer Escorts, Destroyers and Escort Craft in a violent firefight in total darkness against a force of over 20 Shin'yō Suicide Boats each one capable of speeds over 30 knots and carrying two depth charges in their bows. Though several of the enemy craft were destroyed in the exchange of fire, 2 of them by the PC-1129, [2] one of the Shin'yō was able to evade the mass of fire coming from the American Ships and likely focused on the muzzle flashes coming from the PC-1129's guns and sent his explosive-laden craft hurtling into her Starboard side aft.

The resulting detonation of the Shin'yō's depth charge load blew open an enormous hole in the PC-1129’s hull, in addition to knocking out her propellers and steering ability. Many of her crew topside were blown into the water from her decks by the blast, and PC-1129 quickly began to flood by the Stern as she lost headway and went dead in the water. Fires quickly broke out on and around her and were fed by spilling diesel fuel from her damaged tanks, leaving her a brightly lit target in the dark night. With several more Shin'yō craft operating in the area and his ship presenting a large target, PC-1129’s Captain ordered the floundering craft abandoned shortly before 2200hrs. Allowing her surviving crew enough time to swim clear of her, PC-1129 finally gave out and sank stern-first on 31 January 1945, taking two members of her crew with her to the bottom.

PC-1129 was one of three major ships built at Defoe Shipbuilding Company that were lost during World War II that were the others were USS Rich (DE-695) and the United States Coast Guard Cutter Escanaba (WPG-77). She was struck from the Navy List on 23 February 1945. [3]

She received one battle star for her service.

HISTORY OF PUTNAM COUNTY

Putnam County is located between Terre Haute and Indianapolis. The Historic National Road, now known as U.S. 40, crosses the county about five miles south of the county seat, Greencastle. The Indiana portion of the road was completed in 1834, and thousands of settlers used it to move west. Many of them, upon reaching the gently rolling landscape of Putnam County, decided to end their journey when they discovered the area was rich in fertile soil, abundant hardwood timber forests, and clear running water over limestone rocky beds. Descendents of many of these pioneer families still live on the land their ancestors acquired through original land patents from the federal government in the early to mid-1800's. Be sure to check out the County History link below for some early history on Greencastle and Putnam County.
