An interesting Osprey campaign book covering some of the largest but often forgotten battles of the Napoleonic wars, including Aspern, Napoleon's first defeat on the battlefield. It is clearly written and of great use to those interested in the Austrian Army of the period and helps dispel some myths about this much maligned force. The Campaign of 1809 brought a renewal of the confrontation between the French and Austrian Empires. Napoleon's advance into central Europe brought him up against a revitalized Austrian Army under Archduke Charles. The result was two separate titanic clashes, in May at Aspern-Essling and in July at Wagram. Amid the carnage, Napoleon's aura of military invincibility was to begin to erode.
"Aspern & Wagram 1809" is an Osprey Campaign Series book, authored by Ian Castle and illustrated with a selection of period drawings and portraits, and a modern collection of battlefield diagrams. The introduction quickly recaps the road to war in 1809, and discusses the opposing commanders and their armies and plans. The bulk of the story is wrapped around the two battles, which involved hundreds of thousands of men over several days of intense combat. The narrative can be challenging to follow in places. What is clear from the text is that Archduke Charles was a worthy opponent of Napoleon, who repeatedly underestimated the Austrians and who prevailed in his campaign as much as weight of numbers as by battlefield brilliance. The Campaign of 1809 has been more extensively explored in other, longer books, but this Osprey edition is a good introduction. Recommended.
The final paragraph in this book contains the following statement (page 90): "Never again would [Napoleon] experience the crowning glory of a triumphant campaign across the battlefields of Europe and don the victor's laurels." This slender Osprey volume, in the Campaign" series, explores the twinned battles of Aspern and Wagram.
The campaign pitted the capable Archduke Charles (Austria) against the redoubtable Napoleon Bonaparte. The Archduke was a very capable commander and gave Napoleon as much as he could handle. As with others in this series, we get a glimpse of the commanders on both sides, the armies (including a very useful order of battle), and strategy/tactics of each side.
The focus is on the preliminary battle at Aspern and Essling, after which Napoleon retreated, and the follow up major battle at Wagram (around 300,000 soldiers involved--the largest battle up to this point in time, according to the text). The battles were bloody and both armies fought fiercely. Napoleon began the campaign with a dismissive attitude toward the Austrians. He felt quite differently at the conclusion of the conflict!
There are some useful (and other not so useful) maps, orders of battle for both battles, and so on. All in all, a nice addition to the "Campaign" series.
Osprey Military Books has been putting out an amazing, reliable, and entertaining line of material for more years than I can remember. The books are well-researched and written, with wonderful coloured templates, original etchings, and pictures of relics and historical sites and places of import.
ASPERN & WAGRAM 1809 is one of the CAMPAIGN Series in the Osprey collection, and it is in a word - Amazing! There are 96 pages covering everything from: The Origins of the Campaign, The Opposing Commanders & their forces, their battle plans, and then coverage of the Campaign itself. It goes on to discuss the Aftermath of the battle and, as well as what the battlefield looks like today. It provides information for 'Further Reading', and for the die-hards out there, it also furnishes how to Play Aspern & Wagram as a War-Game. It even recaps with a list of the Chronology of the battle in bold, crisp print.
The text is well written, easy and enjoyable to follow. The book is ripe with illustrations, both historical and contemporary, as well as maps, three dimensional diagrams of the battlefields, and illustrations all throughout.
There are contemporary templates of the soldiers uniforms, as well as colored maps and charts with troop movement and battle locales.
This book is perfect for both the experienced and well-versed, and the interested first timer approaching the subject. ASPERN & WAGRAM 1809: MIGHTY CLASH OF EMPIRES is just one more superior piece of military literature that Osprey can claim as their own - and should - with pride.
A side note: as a Painter of Napoleonic Miniatures, and interested historian, this book is an excellent source of information that can be used in tandem with many of the OSPREY Men-At-Arms books on the Napoleon uniforms.

Ian Castle has done a masterful job recounting the Campaign of 1809 in two Osprey Campaign books, Eggmühl, 1809: Storm over Bavaria , and Aspern and Wagram, 1809: Mighty Clash of Empires . Both accounts are accurate, balanced, and present a view of the two halves of the campaign that can be used with confidence by historians, researchers, modelers, and wargamers. Written four years apart, they nonetheless should be used in conjunction with one another to get the full view and feel of this most interesting of campaigns.
Using both accepted sources, and information from the Austrian staff history, Krieg 1809 , which the author diligently notes in the volume on Eggmühl, is a broad picture painted of a desperate bid for victory by a resurgent Austrian army, anxious to avenge the defeats of 1796ᇵ, 1800, and 1805. The Austrians are goaded into action by seemingly near-fatal French reverses in Spain at Baylen. The newly reorganized Hapsburg Army under the command of Archduke Charles, whom Wellington thought was the best allied commander of the period, invades Bavaria in an attempt to catch the French half-ready, as the Prussians had been in 1806.
What follows is a well-researched and authoritative tale of marching, fighting, attack and retreat, that qualifies as very reliable volumes that can be used for authoritative research for those enthusiasts who don't have access to the Austrian archives. Errors in the text are few and far between. Castle maintains the old error that Marshal Berthier was the commander of the Army of Germany, when he definitely was not. Napoleon was attempting to command from Paris in the initial stages of the campaign. Additionally, Castle states that there was little tactical distinction between the French line and light infantry, which is not entirely correct as to employment and leadership. He also makes the mistake that voltigeurs were called chasseurs in the light infantry units, when they were also called voltigeurs chasseurs being the equivalent of fusiliers in the line units. Lastly, he assigns numbers to the corps of the French Army of Italy, when they had none. These minor errors do not detract from the overall impact of these two authoritative volumes.
Interestingly, on the other hand, Castle makes the important points that the lack of backplates for the Austrian cuirassiers 'was a serious disadvantage' for Austrian cuirassiers when they clashed with their French counterparts. He also points out that 'in the Hapsburg army, progression was dictated more by birth and seniority than by military prowess.' Casualties are generally accurate, and give a good indication of the savagery of the fighting in the campaign.
Christa Hook's artwork in the Eggmühl volume is excellent. There is variety, action, and accuracy, and it greatly enhances the presentation. I particularly like the painting of the French light infantry firing on deployed Austrian artillery from an overlooking tree line. The illustrations in general are superb, some of the black and white pictures being hard to find and not generally available in current "in-print" volumes of the period. One disappointment was the reuse of some of the color prints from the Osprey "Men-at-Arms" series, in the Aspern/Wagram volume, which are not always reliable. On the other hand, Romain Baulesch's small watercolors are delightful and add much to the Aspern and Wagram volume.
I was impressed with the balanced, complete coverage these two volumes gave to the Campaign of 1809. These are the best of the current "Campaign Series" that I have seen, and Ian Castle is to be congratulated for setting the standard in this venue. Both of these books are highly recommended and should be used by every enthusiast of the period.

Osprey's study of the Battles of Aspern and Wagram of the Napoleonic Wars (1799-1815). The 1809 campaign on the Danube was to break the spell of Napoleon's invincibility. Indeed Wagram - the largest battle in history at the time - was Napoleon's revenge for his first personal defeat on the battlefield - at Aspern - Essling. In gaining this revenge the French commander was not wholly successful. Although the French won the battle as the Austrians eventually quit the field, the victory was an extremely hollow one. Both these epic battles are expertly described by Ian Castle, chronicling the many changes of fortune as each side captured, lost, then recaptured key positions.
Ian Castle is a founder member of the Napoleonic Association, and is still very involved in their activities both in Britain and mainland Europe. Ian began writing over ten years ago and besides having numerous articles published in military magazines and journals, he has written or co-written eight books, four of which for the Osprey Campaign series.
