Until now only two of those gold coins were known, which were issued 2,000 years ago.
One of the most legendary coins of the ancient world, the one celebrating the murder of the Roman dictator Julius Caesar, has been put up for auction in the United Kingdom, reported the US entity Numismatic Guaranty Corporation, which provides coin certification and authentication services.
It is a gold denarius issued in 42 BC. byGross June Mark, the assassin of Julius Caesar. One side of the coin bears the engraving of two daggers, representing Brutus and his friend Gaius Cassius Longinus, as the main material authors of this crime.
Below is the inscription ‘EID MAR’, which designates the Ides of March (March 15) from 44 BC like the fateful day the murder took place.
The other side of the coin presents theportrait of Brutus, and presents him as the person responsible for the regicide. The denarius is in perfect condition and was in a private collection in Europe.
The coin will be auctioned by London-based Roma Numismatics on October 29. Its starting price is£ 500,000 (about $ 648,000), but experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation, which certified the authenticity of that coin, do not rule out that it can be sold forseveral million dollars.
Although there are about 100 silver coins of the ‘EID MAR’, until now only two gold denarii were known.
