When theV Centenary of the expedition, RTVE and Amazon Prime Video join forces to launch international co-production'Unlimited', a four-episode adventure series that will bring to television the first round the world of Elcano and Magellan.
The story of the exciting journey of the five ships that, leaving Spain, showed that the Earth is spherical, had not been told in fiction until now. The project was presented today at the General Headquarters of the Navy.
The launch of this production is part of theCollaboration agreement signed by RTVE and the Ministry of Defense in March 2018 on the occasion of the fifth centenary of the first round the world.
The agreement contemplates the realization of different activities related to the anniversary, with special attention to the implementation of audiovisual and documentary projects about the feat.
‘Unlimited'Will put into images the fast-paced epic of a group of sailors heading into the unknown in a great production full of action and adventure that will consist offour 60 minute chaptersshot in Spanish.
The production of this ambitious series that will have cinematic treatment, will be shot throughout this year in large locations inDominican Republic, where spectacular maritime sequences will be filmed at the well-known Pinewood Studios, and atSpain, in the Canary Islands and the Basque Country.
To recreate the great journey, The Victoria and Trinidad ships will be rebuilt and the replica of the Nao Victoria will be used, the only one of the five ships of the expedition that returned to port and, therefore, the first ship to go around the world.
MONO Films and KILIMA Media will be the producers of ‘Unlimited’’, Which will have a team first level technician, headed by the BritishSimon West,longtime action-adventure film director (‘Con Air’, ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’, ‘The General’s Daughter’, ‘The Mercenaries 2’…) and the producer Miguel Menendez de Zubillaga (‘The infinite trench’, ‘Loving Pablo’, ‘The paper boy’, ‘Camaron’).
Patxi Amezcua is the person in charge of the scripts of ‘Limitless’.
About the first round the world
The first round the world was an almost impossible mission that tried to find a new route to "the islands of spices" and that ended up changing the history of Humanity by showing that the Earth is round.
A feat that forever changed commerce, the economy, astrology and knowledge of the planet as we know it today, and is considered to be one of the greatest feats in history.
A total of 239 sailors, captained by the Portuguese sailorFerdinand of Magellan, started the expedition. They started fromSanlucar de Barrameda on August 20, 1519.
Only 18 starving and sick seafarers returned three years later in the only ship that endured the adventure, captained by the Spanish sailorJuan Sebastián Elcano.
They had traveled 14,460 leagues, always from west to east, with which they had managed to go around the world completely and demonstrated, although it was not the initial objective of the trip, that the earth is spherical.
