On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Atapuerca Foundation, Queen Sofía, Honorary President of the Atapuerca Foundation, received a representation of her Board of Trustees in audience today at the Palacio de la Zarzuela.
The meeting was attended by the president, Antonio M. Méndez Pozo, two of the vice presidents, José María Bermúdez de Castro and Eudald Carbonell, the general director, Javier Gutiérrez, and six other representatives of the Board of this entity.
The President of the Foundation, in the company of the rest of the Trustees, has taken the opportunity to personally deliver the Queen Doña Sofía commemorative sculpture made by Burgos artist Óscar Martín, which symbolizes the engravings of the Galería del Sílex.
This sculpture was delivered last June during the Board of Trustees to the current and former patrons of the Foundation, for their commitment to the Foundation, who in these 20 years have participated and collaborated in this research project on human evolution.
Queen Sofía accepted the Honorary Presidency of the Atapuerca Foundation in 2010, a year before opening its headquarters in Ibeas de Juarros (Burgos).
Queen Sofía has shown a permanent interest in the Atapuerca Project and has attended several events related to it, such as the World Congress of Prehistory, organized by the Atapuerca Foundation at the University of Burgos, in September 2014, to which attended as a listener. In addition, he has chaired several meetings of the Board of Trustees and has visited the sites of the Sierra de Atapuerca on several occasions.
