Hasankeyf, in southeastern Turkey, officially started to disappear. The Tigris valley where the archaeological site and 199 other villages are located, will be submerged in the 10 billion cubic meters of water from the Ilsu dam.

With the construction of this dam not only will a site with 12,000 years of history disappear, but almost 200 other villages will be submerged, forcing more than 6,000 people, almost all Kurds, to leave their homes.

After years of controversy, construction work on the dam continues.
