Andreas Bauer was a German engineer what developed the first industrial steam printing press With Friedrich Koening, who invented the technology and sold it to The Times in 1814.
Bauer was born in Stuttgart on August 18, 1783 and he studied mechanics and optics, before studying mathematics in Tübingen, 40 km south of his hometown.
In 1800 he emigrated to England, meeting Koening in 1807 and beginning to work with him on the new steam press which was a success from 1814.
In 1817 he returned with Koening to Germany, founding the company Koenig & Bauer which is still in operation, being the oldest active printing press manufacturer in the world.
Behind the Koening's death in 1833, his widow joined the company to continue the business.
In 1847 and under his direction, created a new press capable of making 6,000 impressions per hour.
Another Bauer invention is the application of a rotation in the operation of the press, and the first machine with these characteristics was delivered in 1840 in Leipzig.
Andreas Bauer died on December 27, 1860 in Würzburg.
